Pre-use Checklist

General Safety

1. Is your working environment safe:

a. Trip hazards

b. Is lighting sufficient

c. Overcrowding – if there is already someone in workshop, talk to them about what you want to do

PPE

1. Clothing – no loose clothing – no gloves or use skin tight gloves

2. No Jewellery – necklaces, rings, bracelets

3. Safety glasses

4. Ear defenders

5. Dust Mask – MDF is carcinogenic!!

6. Stout footwear

Equipment

1. Check the saw for is in good order, look for:

a. Frayed electrical cables
b. Guards missing or not installed
c. Riving knife is fitted
d. Dust extraction is set up and working
e. Rise and fall of blade is functioning
f. Rip fence is moving freely and clamps properly
g. The crown guard is fitted to the table
h. Push sticks are to hand

2. Check dust extractor

a. Bag is not full – can empty in skip in car park
b. Plug holes with duct tape
c. Check it is sucking up – disconnect from saw and hoover some dust- sometimes rags get sucked up and block tube – disconnect at sucker end
d. The pipe is connected to saw


3. Set up saw for use

a. Is the saw in the right place so wood can be fed through – it is on wheels so easily moved – lock wheels when in right position
b. Have a table for materials to be cut and after cutting
c. Check you have the right blade fitted, combination will cut most things
d. Adjust blade height – 5-10mm above thickness of material
e. Adjust rip fence or mitre guide
f. Mentally or physically check you can do the cut before you switch on the saw
g. Check your PPE – eye protection and ear defenders
h. Check no one else is going to get in the way or distract you

How to use the Circular saw safely

Before you start

1. This saw is dangerous to use – use only after you have been inducted and feel confident using it

2. Wear PPE – glasses and ear defenders minimum

3. Stout footwear – recommended

4. Do no wear jewellery including rings

5. No dangly bits be they clothing or hair

6. Do not rush – make sure you have plenty of time to do the job and tidy up after

7. Do not use when tired – very common cause of accidents

8. If you are in doubt ask for help

Plan your work

1. Design your work before you start –

2. Plan your cuts

3. Make sure have sufficient material

4. Measure twice cut once – it is safer when you are calm – you are not calm if you have made the wrong cut

5. Is the saw setup correctly – right blade, riving knife fitted, extraction working, push stick at hand, enough room to cut the work

6. Is there somewhere to put the wood before you cut it and somewhere for the finished wood

7. Practise switching machine on and off

Making your cuts

1. Adjust saw blade to correct height

2. Set rip fence or mitre guide

3. Start extractor

4. Start saw

5. Make you cuts – use push stick(s)

6. Do not lean over machine

7. Keep you fingers clear of fast spinny thing – cuts wood, flesh and bones easily

8. Do not pass you hands over the blade

9. Stand to one side

10. If saw makes funny noise – stop, switch it off, when blade has stopped investigate

Post-use

Clear up after yourself

* Does the Dust extractor bag need emptying
* Brush down machine
* Sweep up area
* Clear away any scrap/unused wood
* Slide table saw back against wall
* Count your fingers, if still ten a good days work
