Title

Extending the Metal Space

Proposer

Alan, Toby, James and Barny

Date proposed

10 October 2020

Date for Decision

17 October 2020

What is being asked for

A budget for infrastructure improvements and some help preparing, painting the workshop and moving things around

Some storage and racking for tools and stock

A basic set of tooling so members do not need to borrow either Lion House or Toby's tools

Metal Space Floor plan

Cost

Budget of £800 to £1,000

  • Painting the floor - £100
  • Racking and Storage - £200
  • Workbench - ?
  • Extra tooling - £400
  • PPE and first aid - £150

Why/how this will be good to have

To expand into and make the Metal space a nicer, safer envirioment with a cleaner looking and well laid out workshop. This will make the place more inviting and better working place for all our members.

A group of us met in the space to discuss what needed to be done. A floorplan was surveyed and drawing created (see above). The final layout of equipment is work in progress

  • To delinearate the workshop from existing tenants a division a partition would be needed, this will be made up from storage racking and workbenchs and dividers. We have some storage but will need some more.
  • The floor will be painted (probably slate grey) starting with the bay furtherest from the door.
  • The walls will be cleared of superfluous wiring and other bits and then painted
  • Tool storage on the walls

The plan is to arrange the workshop into areas:

Machining area: Harrision Lathe, milling machine, Elliot drill bench
Fabrication area: Air compressor and tools, cut off saw, grinder, assembly bench
Welding area: Mig, Tig and arc welders, welding bench
Hot metals area: Forge, anvil, casting equipment
CNC machine area: Space should be allowed for the CNC plasma cutter when it is functional

Outcome

Approved - 17 October 2020 Ben summerised.

Actions

Who is taking this forward and what will they do? - Toby and Alan will act as project leaders

There is a quite a lot of work to achieve the final outcome. A few working parties should get quite a lot done.

Buy paint etc and material for partition

Start to clear, prepare and paint the floor furthest from the door

Partition off from rest of tenants with existing shelving/cupboards

As work progresses move towards the door

Move exisitng machinery and benches into position

Buy tooling as needed

Organise first aid and Covid section

Write-up workshop induction

Write-up instructions lathe, milling machine, and other tools
