== Metalspace Improvements ==
Meeting 19th June 2025 with '''Alan, Ellis, Kristian, Nicholas''' - about making the Metalspace more Ship-Shape.
It's generally accepted to be 'in need of improvement' - make it more useable, better organised, have better control, and only usable by a tiny niche. 'not working for the HS'.
Wiki proposal to implement the improvements
'''A-list'''
Lighting
CCTV
Clearout
Safety
Lock Cabinet
'''B-list'''
Ventilation
Water
Less Grey Zone
Other notes
'''Users'''
'''1 - Big Users'''
* Kristian
* Ellis
* Ned
* Jordan
* Toby
* (Nicholas)
'''2 - Rare Users'''
* Andy
* Barny
* (Plexer?)
'''Lighting'''
Everybody's big #1
Getting the central bulb in, is easiest and first, and we have access to mark's big ladder
Lighting above the lathe, ellis will make a bracket for - extend 1m+ out, and be drilled into the wall
Maybe other lighting ideas. Kristian will look at wiring options. (avoid sockets or get more?)
'''CCTV'''
Is "other people" a problem? and how much? CCTV is switched off and maybe moved.
Wire CCTV in a way that makes it harder to disable. Kristian will look at/do.
'''Lockable cabinet'''
For tools we care about - yes. Alan will look to get a large metal cupboard thing.
'''Clearout'''
There is tons of shite, so Alan will come with trailer. Ellis keen to help. Toby will be required to identify stuff.
The cement mixer bowl "as bin" should go.
New bin required
'''Safety'''
Ellis will look through to see what PPE we have
* 1 pair of "good" gloves
* 2 pairs of falling apart gloves
* 1 pair of eye goggles
* 1 very scratched face shield
* 1 welding apron
* 0 general use aprons
* 2 ear defenders
* We need 2 more pairs of gloves. An apron (pref leather), 1 more pair of eye protection glasses, another set of ear defenders
* and lastly a replacement face shield.
* E: I will try find a face shield with interchangeable shields incase it gets super scratched again but any suggestions for other general use items will be much appreciated.
* 1 working welding mask (joker one)
* 1 not working (no dark) welding mask (flames one) - I replaced the batteries in the flames one but it didn't help.

N and Kristian think a communal respirator is a good idea. Alan is not so sure. Ellis would like £1500 welding/respirator thing.
PPE box / cupboard / shelf with names on whos it is
Also, we need (to consider) broom / dustpan / vacuum (Ellis keen) - Henry Hoover will do. (pen paper), latex gloves, bin, wipes, blue-roll,
'''Lock Cabinet'''
Seems required and people are keen. Alan talks of large metal cabinet. Kristian mentioned doorbot technology.
== B-issues for later==

'''Ventilation'''
Fumes from the welder is the main issue, but general extraction is good.
But, in the longer term, setting on the sandblaster where the hammers are (Ellis will clear that area - possibly creating a hammer board)
Then using good extraction (not just throwing sand out of the window), with general space extraction. Possibly fume-hood for the welder (?)
'''Water'''
Currently, Ellis wheels water to the HS with a crap funnel. This could be better. Kristian suggested taking rainwater at the same time as making the ventilation.
Less Grey Zone
Toby / HS tools are unclear
'''Other'''
The milling machine is not-great, and position might change
The hammers desk, Ellis will look to sort out a bit, as it might be where the sandblaster goes
The area opposite the lathe is not being used well. The desk is obscuring the shelves, and is not used for much.

* this waffle is more for the sake of "joining in" than contributing anything meaty.

*what the Hackspace is about
1) we likely need to come in with "it's a maker space, not a hacker-tollerant rogue state", or an attempt to sabotage satellites with software.
* norwich hackspace, a bit about - most importantly location (and photos)
* then the franchise in general (maybe a page off that to go into that if desired)

Hackspace "is about" the tools, and the projects members have made. So photos of them would be good.

maybe, you'd say "come in" first, rather than "selling membership". But whatever.

You need to ask yourself who you're talking to. If you're drawing in "randoms", then that's one thing, but it seems that there's a "community" of organisations, and people would look us up to orientate themselves with 'which thing' this is. So, being connected to the other organisations might make sense. [meetup / collaberate / the college / science festival etc]

If you are "drawing in randoms" then you'd probably want to market yourself as a club, social maker thing, or workshop.

It seems to me that all we need is "where it is and when it is, and is it still going", probably with some images of projects. (to get a better flavour of the output).
Which is pretty much what you said.

[https://aisler.net/ Aisler] are based Netherlands and do cheap prices for small orders of 3 or 6 boards. They tend to be slower than jlc though

For small boards OSHPark is a good option, but the free postage option started taking months after the USPS problems, so haven't used them in a while. For larger boards I haven't been able to beat JLCPCB, and so far have managed to avoid any import charges by keeping the cost below £15

So what are the fumes? from acrylic [https://www.pmma.dk/Acryl_miljopaavirkning.aspx?Lang=en-GB this clever article] says [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methyl_methacrylate MMA], which is non toxic (But an irritant), but you can smell it at 0.05ppm, where 0.17ppm is safe for life-long inhalation, as it breaks down and is not accumulated in the body. That research was commissioned by a acrylic lasercutting company, who installed a 20m chimney and "Induflex has 6 lasers, which are all modified with '''much stronger suction''' than delivered by the manufacturer."

[https://www.reddit.com/r/lasercutting/comments/hbin2v/laser_cut_acrylic_breathing_in_fumes/fv95jkd?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 some chemist on reddit] did back-of-the-envelope maths which suggests an unventilated (normal) lasercutter can go way over 0.17ppm.

[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acrylamide acrylamide(wiki)] - is the "cancerous" chemical in burned things. It is [https://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancer-causes/acrylamide.html "likely or expected"] to be cancerous, is as strong a wording as I could reasonably find.

might be cancerous, might not, either way it stinks real bad and is bad news.

"The bottom line is that it is a good idea to take precautions but don't become paranoid."

[https://hpclaser.co.uk/laser-cutting-fume-extraction-and-filtration-systems/ these pro-grade lasercutter filters..] say:

A fume filter typically uses a combination of a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) pre-filter and a combined filter which contains activated charcoal. The HEPA filter captures the airborne particles in the extracted air and the charcoal filter removes the aroma.

Here is the [https://hpclaser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/AD500-datasheet.pdf datasheet] for an £8k filter system.

[https://electrocorpairpurification.wordpress.com/2011/07/05/health-and-safety-concerns-laser-engraving-hazards/ this page here] says:
Electrocorp has designed air cleaners for laser engraving and laser cutting environments. They feature a deep bed of activated carbon for the removal of chemicals as well as a powerful HEPA filter to remove particles that are released in the laser cutting process.

I've done it so many times now I just buy the parts in large quantities, so the cost per machine is negligible. But if you only plan on running one printer and don't want to go through the hassle it's possibly cheaper and easier to just buy a printer that has higher manufacturing and safety standards.

With the holes, I use 0.2 as a Tolerance - so make the hole 0.2mm larger than the thing.
But side-holes are going to be less circular due to the layers. And you can always cut material away.
I very rarely print at 100% infill, usually 30% or something. It's quicker, and usually fine.
Depends what it is. Also, huge lumps of solid prints can warp as they cool (the top shrinks, and they bow)
(the bottom does not shrink because it's on a heated plate)
BUT, if you really want to play it safe you can get an automatic fire suppression canister and mount it above your printer.

I've done it so many times now I just buy the parts in large quantities, so the cost per machine is negligible. But if you only plan on running one printer and don't want to go through the hassle it's possibly cheaper and easier to just buy a printer that has higher manufacturing and safety standards.

this is a straight paste from [https://www.reddit.com/r/ender3/comments/a9q9jk/for_new_ender_3_owners_a_quick_note_on_thermal/ecmzf2g/ this reddit thread]

there are various guides and discussions out there, but here are the basics I do for pretty much any chinese printer I buy:

- Re-flash with marlin and enable Thermal Runaway protection

- Clip all soldered mains connectors and use crimped ferules instead

- Bypass onboard mosfets with more reliable external mosfets (this has the added benefit of diverting high voltage from your mainboard, so if the mosfets fail it doesn't fry your board).

- Add in-line fuses to all mains sources (take care of it at the same time as the mosfets- one for the hot end, one for the bed).

- Replace your bed wires with high strand count silicone insulated RC wire with proper AWG rating for current

- Relieve wire stress on moving parts by using stiff ribbed nylon wire sleeves

Additionally, I have a custom smoke detector wired to a 120v relay that will shut down power to the printer in the event any of those other precautions fail. Generally speaking, you'll have smoke before you have fire- so the theory is that if something starts to burn the power gets disconnected before it can ignite.
